Always take the high road

Always take the high road
‘…pray for those who spitefully use you.’ Luke 6:28 NKJ

It’s easy to get too familiar with Jesus’ words and therefore lose the sheer impact of what He’s saying. Take this one for starters: ‘Pray for those who spitefully use you. To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either… just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.’ (Luke 6:28-31 NKJ) Whoaa! Let’s backtrack a minute. What kind of planet is Jesus living on when He says this? Offer your other cheek to be punched! Yeah and why not draw a target on your pants so they won’t miss when they kick you there? Giving away your cloak: what, are we supposed to mug ourselves as well? What is Jesus going on about?
It’s not about mugging yourself or allowing yourself to be treated like dirt, Jesus is talking about setting yourself a standard here. And, oh boy, is it a high standard! If someone strikes you, you want to hurt them back, but the new standard won’t allow it. In fact, the new standard isn’t even saying you should walk away and forget it. We’re now required to pray good things and give good things to our enemy. How radical is that!
