‘…Go now and leave your life of sin.’ John 8:11 NIV
Jesus always told it like it is. He would never put a bandage on an infected wound. He always insisted on getting right down to the root cause of a problem. A woman who’d been caught in bed with a bloke who wasn’t her husband was brought to him. He first dealt with her accusers and then told her lovingly but firmly, ‘…Go now and leave your life of sin.’ (John 8:11 NIV)
We come to the same Jesus with the same burden of guilt and shame that woman felt. Listen: ‘Since He Himself has gone through suffering and temptation, He is able to help us when we are being tempted.’ (Hebrews 2:18 NLT) Sadly, in our ‘Do It Yourself’ culture, we often try to sort our issues out everywhere else before coming to Jesus. Why? Because He’s the only person we can’t fake it to—we have to be 100% real with Him.
That’s scary for many of us! But it’s worth it! Job writes, ‘…prepare your heart and lift up your hands to Him in prayer. Get rid of your sins, and leave all iniquity behind you. Then your face will brighten in innocence. You will be strong and free of fear. You will forget your misery. It will all be gone like water under the bridge… you will have courage because you will have hope. You will be protected and will rest in safety. You will lie down unafraid, and many will look to you for help.’ (Job 11:13–19 NLT) Jesus invites you to step into the river of God’s mercy today. (See the inside back cover.) Let it flow over you setting you free. Whether it’s the guilt of something you have done, or the pain for something that was done to you—get real with Jesus!
